As Executive Director of the Massachusetts Smart Growth Alliance for more than 12 years, André became the leading voice of zoning reform in the state.
He has championed dismantling institutional racism in planning and housing and helped launch a Planners of Color Network in 2019. Under his leadership, MSGA trained communities in placemaking, district management, and storytelling strategies, bringing them into widespread use. André helped establish Transportation for Massachusetts and created the Great Neighborhoods program to support local activism. He serves on the board of Smart Growth America and co-chairs its state and local caucus. Previously, André coordinated a grassroots revitalization initiative in Lawrence, Massachusetts, that won awards from the Romney and Bush Administrations, and also worked in the Massachusetts State House and Harvard University. Andre studied at Dartmouth College and El Colegio de México in Mexico City, is fluent in Spanish, and is a member of the LGBTQ community.
